THE LINUX FOUNDATION PROJECTS

Accelerating the RISC-V Software Ecosystem

The RISC-V Software Ecosystem (RISE) Project is the critical bridge between hardware specifications and commercial reality. As a Linux Foundation project, RISE transforms RISC-V from a promising Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) into a high-performance, production-ready platform for the world’s most demanding computing environments.

Explore Our Accomplishments

RISE’s mission is to accelerate the software readiness timeline for RISC-V. RISE is the industry’s mission-critical engine for software parity, ensuring that the foundational software stack—from firmware and kernel up to the cloud, plus the toolchain to implement it all—is optimized, upstreamed, and ready for high-end computing.

The RISE Project partners closely with RISC-V International to expedite delivery of more innovative RISC-V products into the market, specifically through prioritization and enablement of software.

RISE eliminates the “software tax” associated with adopting a new architecture. By pooling global engineering resources and funding, we de-risk RISC-V adoption for silicon vendors and system integrators alike. We don’t just coordinate; we deliver the upstream code that ensures RISC-V is a “plug-and-play” choice for the data center, mobile, and client computing.

Please get to know us through our members and leadership pages, and consider joining our effort to fully enable the RISC-V software ecosystem.

RISE Working Groups

A RISE Work Group focuses on a specific category of interest. WGs are formed by the RISE TSC and are responsible for:

  • Coming up with projects to propose to the Board for investment.
  • Managing proposed project requirements, timelines, and where appropriate project plan.
  • For net-new project investments (not contributions to existing projects upstream), leading the project execution.

See the Ways of Working document on how a WG operates.

Accomplishments

In just three years, RISE has made amazing strides to enable the RISC-V Software Ecosystem.

  • More than 20 active RFPs, injecting more than 1m euros into the ecosystem
  • Developer Appreciation Program providing more than 50k euros to individuals
  • Build farm in Europe through a partnership with Scaleway
  • Board farm in the US through a partnership with OSU OSL
  • Maintainership for RISC-V in the Yocto Project
  • A detailed Software Optimization Guide
  • Deep ongoing partnership with RISC-V International
